You don’t have to have a lot of money – or tools – to start making your own nail art. What you do need are a few simple nail tools that can help you get started. If you already have basic supplies laying around your house, use them. Otherwise, grab something inexpensive and use it. After a little practice, you’ll know what kind of nail tools work best for you.
First up is a simple tool for cutting the cuticle. If you haven’t done this before, it’s a good idea to learn how to do this, even if you’ve done this type of thing many times before. That’s because with time and practice, the cuticle layer gets harder and thicker. You want a tool that allows you to slice through the layers of nail, without damaging the cuticle; a rounded file or a sharp edge can be a good choice, as they’re both very thin and very hard.
Another tool you’ll need is a bamboo stick. It might sound odd, but these sticks are actually quite helpful when it comes to nail art. Simply soak the bamboo stick into water overnight and soak the stick in nail polish for a few minutes; this removes any oil or debris from the bamboo stick, making it easier to apply to the nail. Then apply the nail polish to the cuticle, starting about a quarter-inch outside of the nail, and press down gently to spread it evenly and lightly. Voila!
